The Western Conference for Liturgy (WCL) is the association of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions, Diocesan Directors of Liturgy and others interested in liturgy in Western Canada. Its members are drawn from both the English and French sectors of the Church in Western Canada.
This Conference has the approval of and is encouraged by the Assembly of Western Catholic Bishops (AWCB). Archbishop Gérard Pettipas, C.Ss.R. currently serves as the liaison between the AWCB and the WCL.
Recognizing that the local bishop is the chief liturgist of his diocese as stated in Articles 22, #1 and 41 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the Conference states its purpose as follows:
- To promote and facilitate exchanges between its members for the purpose of mutual enrichment, sharing experiences and general co-operation with each other.
- Assume tasks requested by the Assembly of Western Catholic Bishops and make recommendations to them with respect to liturgy.
- Seek to be aware of the liturgical needs of the Church in Western Canada and of liturgical developments elsewhere, especially insofar as these have a bearing on the liturgy in the region.
- Communicate and cooperate with the National Liturgy Office, Office National de Liturgie, other regional liturgy conferences of Canada and any other body whose work has a bearing on liturgy.
In addition to Diocesan Representatives delegated by the particular dioceses/archdioceses and an elected representative to the National Council for Liturgy, the membership of the Western Conference for Liturgy also consists of Associate Members. This means that any interested individual may join as a non-voting member for an annual fee of $10.
